How to feed ball pythons
59Ways to feed ball pythons
There is three ways of feeding ball pythons (and most other snakes) which are all listed below:
- Live Food: One of the ways to feed ball pythons is live feeding, live feeding I don't think should be an option for you unless your snake just WILL NOT eat dead food, and I say will not underlined because before you do decide that your ball python won't eat dead food, please make sure you try all the methods possible to get your snake to eat (just search it on google). If your snake won't eat dead food, to feed live food safely, buy your live feeder rodent, put the rodent in with your ball python, and just let the snake do its thing, just make sure you supervise the snake until it has successfully killed the rodent. Also to make the rodents death as quick as possible, while the snake is constricting its prey, tug on the rodents tail so that the snake thinks its prey is trying to escape, making the snake constrict harder, making the rodents death quicker. BUT ONCE AGAIN, ONLY FEED LIVE IF YOUR SNAKE WILL NOT EAT DEAD.
- Frozen/Thawed: Frozen/thawed is probably the most convenient way, because instead of having to go to the store all the time to buy your live feeder, you can just buy a bag of frozen mice/rats to last you at lot longer, personally I don't usually feed live or f/t, usually I feed the option below. Anyway, in order to feed your snake f/t, take a rodent from the freezer (obviously), get a bowl and get the hottest water you can from your tap, and fill the bowl, put the rodent in a ziploc back and put the bag in the water, leave the rodent for about 10-15 minutes or until it is fully thawed, to make sure it is thawed, just squish all the parts of the body, if it is all soft, you are fully thawed. Get your feeding tongs (buy some if you don't already have some) hold the rodent by its tail with the tongs, and dangle the rodent near your snakes face, your snake should then stike the rodent as normal, and then eat it, if it doesn't strike, and instead just takes the food and automatically eats it, there is nothing to worry about.
- Pre Killed: Pre killed isn't as convinient as f/t unless you breed your own rodents, but pre killed rodents have more nutrients than f/t because freezing the rodents looses nutrients, but for a beginner, f/t is definatly the way to go, anyway, freshly killed is when you get a live feeder rodent, and kill it yourself, making it easier than having to thaw it out, this is the method we personally use at InfiniteConstrictors because we breed our own rats, but to go out and buy the rodents every so often is alot more complicated, so if you are not willing to breed your own rodents, this method is not recommended. I am now going to tell you the most humane ways to kill your feeder rodents:
- DISCRETION IS ADVISED, I am going to be telling the readers how to HUMANELY kill their rodents to feed to there snakes, if you would not like to read this, please leave now
- Humane ways of killing:
- CO2 Chamber: A co2 chamber basically puts the rodents to sleep with no pain or stress involved, for more information on how to make them and other things just search it on google.
- Cervical Dislocation: Cervical Dislocation is also a great method for killing the rodents, this is to break the rodents neck, in order to do this, get a ruler (or just your finger) and hold it over the neck of the rodent, then hold the base of the tail, and pull the tail and head in opposite directions, which, if done correctly should break the neck of the rodent and cause and instant death. Make sure you read more about this method on the internet before trying it for yourself. This method is considered painless: heres a piece off wikipedia...
Cervical dislocation, "breaking the neck" or "snapping the spine" are terms used to describe this killing method intended to be quick and painless. This is a technique used in physical euthanasia by applying pressure to the neck and dislocating the spinal column from the skull or brain.
- The final method isn't quite as effective, but anyway.. basically there isn't a name for this method, all you do is grab the tail of the rodent, and bang it of a hard surface hard enough to kill it, but not make its guts blow out, usually it takes more than one hit, like alot of people though, I just could not do this method. Also this method isn't really recommended but as long as you do it right, it does work, and unless you make a co2 chamber, this method will need to be done for larger rats for snakes like boas and others instead of cervial dislocation.
I hope we could help you, if you would like to ask any questions, just post a comment.
